Part of your regular dental cleaning includes polishing your teeth to remove surface stains, and it does a great job, but to truly whiten and brighten your teeth, a professional teeth whitening treatment is needed. Teeth whitening has become one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures because it provides visible results fast! Our team at Dr. Julie Phillips Prosthodontics can give you that professional whitening you're looking for in a fast, controlled environment. Having your teeth whitened in our office is safer, faster and more effective than any store-bought alternative. We want to share the wonderful benefits of in-office whitening treatment with you!
How Your Teeth Stain
When discussing teeth staining, it can be defined into two types, intrinsic or extrinsic.
Intrinsic stains are deeper stains, stains that are part of the enamel. Intrinsic stains occur when the inner structure of the tooth, called dentin, has streaks or darkens. They can be the result of multiple things including: fluorosis, which is excessive fluoride as a child; tetracycline based antibiotics; or blunt force facial trauma. Unfortunately, patients with intrinsic stains are not going to see color changes from teeth whitening. Though, we can discuss other solutions including dental bonding, veneers or crowns.
Extrinsic stains are surface stains, meaning removable. They are the result of consuming pigment dark foods or beverages, including tea, coffee, and wine. They can also be the result of tomato, soy, or berries. Additionally, tobacco use is a big contributor to extrinsic stains. The surface of our teeth, the enamel, is porous and picks up these types of stains as we age jsut from normal use.
In Office Teeth Whitening
Having your teeth whitened can help them look cleaner, brighter and fresher. Many patients have also reported looking younger. The whitening treatment we perform in our office uses a prescription strength peroxide that can’t be matched in a store bought product. We first create a division between your teeth and gums, we then paint the peroxide gel onto the surface of the teeth. Having treatment applied in a controlled manner means faster, better results. As the gel works, depending on the treatment needed to get the desired result, we may apply a blue laser light to enhance and speed up treatment. In some cases, we may even reapply.
At Home Teeth Whitening
Besides having your teeth whitened in our office, we can create kits with a more mild but still prescription strength gel to whiten at home, for touch ups or to do on your own schedule. We understand that your teeth will continue to collect stains. Your kit will include the gel along with the customized trays to be used at your convenience and teeth whitening instructions.
Store Bought Whitening
If you take a walk down any store aisle of tooth care products, you’re going to see a wide range of products that discuss teeth whitening. All of them that claim teeth whitening power do in fact contain some level of peroxide, which will work, but the whitening power will be very limited. Peroxide is powerful and can cause burning of soft tissue and sensitivity in your teeth. Because of this, store products can’t provide the same concentration we can use in a controlled environment.
